La Cripta dei Cappuccini

di Joseph Roth

(Ucraina 1894-1939)

- LEGGI TUTTO

The star of dance Roberto Bolle and Friends is returning for two dates under the banner of great dance. Lastly, the third of the special evenings will be the prestigious appointment with the symphonic music of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Icons of bel canto and promising young talents: The Arena as the confirmation of great stars and preparation for new talents coming to grips with the world’s largest and most famous open-air theatre

A cast alternating great international stars, habitué of the world’s most prestigious stages, established names and great experts of the complex reality of the Arena, and emerging young artists for whom the feared and coveted initiation of the Arena’s magniloquent stage just has to be in their curriculum.

However this is also a cast that perfectly shows the truly global diffusion of opera, now no longer only a prerogative of western culture, but a real passion of numerous emerging countries, such as China and Russia, also well represented by audiences at the Arena, which has always been the most international venue in the world as far as audiences and performers are concerned.

In the marvellous Trovatore directed by Zeffirelli, after the three almost sold-out performances with the divine Anna Netrebko, there will be the beautiful Italian voice of Anna Pirozzi, an “extraordinary dramatic coloratura soprano”.

In the leading male role, Jusif Eyvazov, the Azerbaijani tenor who, along with his wife Anna Netrebko, is bringing their love story to Verona too.

The 97th edition of the Opera Festival opens on 21st June with the new production by Zeffirelli of Verdi’s Traviata, ultimate synthesis of 60 years of meditation on the beloved opera, will feature on stage Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, a very refined musician as well as a singer sought after by the world’s top theatres; then America’s Lisette Oropesa, the true star of Pesaro’s last Rossini festival, Croatia’s Lana Kos, very attached to the Arena stage, on which she debuted in 2011 with Hugo de Ana’s Traviata, and who we shall also hear in Carmen, then Russia’s Irina Lungu, acclaimed several times in the past by Verona audiences: a quartet with great voices and great stage presence, absolutely necessary for a stage that, better than any other, is able to exalt opera’s nouvelle vague, so attentive to acting and so close to cinematographic imagery.

For the make-up of the new Traviata, the creative team has the benefit of an important collaboration: the face charts for the leading characters were created by make-up designer Michele Magnani, global senior artist with M.A.C. Cosmetics.

In this sense, in the première of Carmen, Uzbekistan’s very beautiful Ksenia Dudnikova and Spain’s talented young Ruth Iniesta, who is also in the Carmina Burana, will definitely be up to the task.

The other great first night on June 22nd will be Verdi’s Aida, magnificently conceived by director Gianfranco de Bosio in 1982, reinterpreting the original project of the first Aida at the Arena, created by Ettore Fagiuoli in 1913, which will feature some interesting new elements this year.

On the stage of the historical Aida, there will once more be Anna Pirozzi, US soprano Tamara Wilson “a real force of nature”, Spain’s Saioa Hernandez, an artistic personality and intriguing Madrid artist, already appreciated in Attila at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, China’s Hui He, well-acquainted with the Arena stage, who will also alternate with Hernandez in Tosca, and Georgia’s beautiful Svetlana Kasyan, greatly appreciated in Italy and throughout the world: five important female voices and figures who will be able to dominate the timeless production and meet the expectations of the immense audience. The Prima ballerina will be the étoile Petra Conti, Principal Dancer of Los Angeles Ballet.

Among the singers there will definitely be no lack of important artists, in terms of voices and as far as stage presence and acting are concerned, from the young Belarusian Pavel Petrov, Alfredo in the première of La Traviata, the eclectic boisterous Vittorio Grigolo, fresh from his performance at the Oscars and true star of the New York Metropolitan, and American tenor Stephen Costello, who performs on the world’s top stages. For the historical edition of Aida there will be Murat Karahan acclaimed at the Arena right from his debut, Erwin Schrott in Carmen, versatile eclectic artist, the great Luca Salsi in Il Trovatore and the baritone par excellence, Leo Nucci.

A really intriguing cast for the participation of true protagonists of the international jet set, ideal for meeting the expectations of opera fans and arousing the curiosity of new Opera spectators, which the Arena has addressed by vocation right from the first opera performance on 10th August 1913 with Aida, the opera that is the symbol of the Arena Festival.

The world’s largest opera show is about to begin, thanks also to the professionalism appreciated throughout the world of Fondazione Arena di Verona’s artists and technicians, with its numerous mimes and extras.

The Mayor of Verona and President of Fondazione Arena di Verona, Federico Sboarina, states:

“I am very proud to present this season, the second after the relaunch, which we all greatly desired. Verona has two great gems, the Fondazione Arena, which in the summer stages its glorious Opera Festival, and the Arena, which, as well as being the monument that is the symbol of the city, is the largest known open-air stage in the world. The particular acoustic characteristics of the amphitheatre and the professionalism of Fondazione Arena form a unique combination, able to take the image of Verona and quality music all over the world. I therefore wish to thanks the General Manager and all the Steering Committee for the excellent work done, the result of great passion and ability. Thanks also go to all the artists who will be on the casts and the workers, who are at the heart of every Festival.”

Cecilia Gasdia, General Manager and Artistic Director of Fondazione Arena, expresses her personal satisfaction for the artistic program of the 97th Opera Festival: “I’m filled with trepidation and great joy, but also anxiety, absolutely every time the exciting moment approaches for the gong to be run, consigning our Verona amphitheatre to the Opera world, as has been the case every summer for over a hundred years. I present you an edition that will feature internationally famous stars performing on the Arena stage alongside promising young artists on their debut. It will be a festival full of important confirmations, eagerly awaited debuts and happy returns for a truly star-studded cast.”

Special thanks go to all the sponsors of the Arena di Verona Opera Festival who, with their unfailing valuable contribution, support the mission of Fondazione Arena and its prestigious Festival.

Abbi cura di me

di Simone Cristicchi

(Roma 1977-*)
